Uneven homework load: what the person who can change it should actually do.

Most writing on this topic is aimed at parents managing one child's evenings, or teachers rethinking their own assignments. Little of it is written for the person with a view across every class in the building: the administrator. This is that version.

The load isn't uneven because anyone is careless.

It's uneven because of how the schedule is built. Every teacher plans their own class independently, with good reason: they know their unit, their pacing, their students. Nobody's job is to look sideways at the other four classes a given student is also taking.

Independent scheduling

A history test, a lab report, and a math quiz can all land on the same Thursday because each teacher chose the best date for their own unit, in isolation from the other three.

No shared view

The school information system holds every assignment for every class, but nothing rolls that data up into a single view of one student's week. The pileup is only visible after it happens, if at all.

This matters for how you respond. If the cause were teacher carelessness, the fix would be a memo. Since the cause is structural, a memo mostly adds guilt without adding visibility.

It also matters for how you talk about it with your faculty. Framing a heavy Thursday as a scheduling coincidence, rather than a lapse in judgment by any one department, keeps the conversation useful. Teachers who feel blamed for a structural gap tend to get defensive about their own dates rather than open to a shared view of the whole picture. The administrators who make progress here usually start by naming the problem correctly: not "who scheduled this badly" but "nobody had the information to schedule around each other even if they wanted to."

What a school can do without writing a new policy.

Policy tools exist: shared assignment calendars, capped homework nights, department coordination meetings. They work when someone maintains them, and they lapse when that person is out sick or the term gets busy. The lower-effort move is to make the load visible and let the existing schedule stay exactly as it is.

  • Aggregate what already exists: assignments, due dates, and estimated time already sit in the SIS. Rolling them up per student, per day, requires no new data entry from teachers.
  • Watch for patterns, not individual complaints: one student's rough week is anecdote. The same pattern across a grade level, every Thursday, is a schedule problem worth a look.
  • Let students carry the ranking, not the schedule: a pileup lands better when the student has a clear order to work through it in, even on weeks nobody could have prevented it.
